The Byre is situated on our small working farm. Scandal Beck runs through the land and the riverbanks are a sight of special scientific interest (SSSI). Our species rich hay meadow is a wonderful place to see fabulous wild flowers, butterflies and wildlife, including red squirrels if you visit at the right time of year. However, if you want to relax at the cottage and enjoy the local wildlife, our bird and red squirrel feeders are well attended. We are in a rural location, so on clear evenings the night skies can be amazing.
There are numerous loop walks from the doorstep, and if you are happy to get in the car, the local countryside is stunning so there are endless opportunities.
The bustling market town of Kirkby Stephen is two and a half miles away. It has a good supermarket, a variety of shops, restaurants/takeaways and several dog-friendly pubs. The town is on the famous Coast to Coast walking route, and Kirkby Stephen railway station is on the historic and scenic Settle-Carlisle railway line. Steam trains also run through the summer.
